Virtual Lactation Consultation

Online Breastfeeding Help from Anywhere in the USA

What is a Virtual Lactation Consultant?

A virtual lactation consultant is an IBCLC that meets with mothers online via HIPAA Compliant video chat platform, where a lactation consultant reviews your health history, baby's health history, breastfeeding challenges and helps you create a breastfeeding plan to work toward achieving your breastfeeding goals.

Virtual Lactation Consultants can help with most breastfeeding issues, just like an in-home or in-office breastfeeding consultant can.

Breastfeeding Services Virtual Lactation Consultants help with include, but are not limited to:

  • Prenatal Lactation Consults / Private Breastfeeding Classes

  • Postpartum Breastfeeding Consults to check latch

  • Breastfeeding Troubleshooting

    • Sore Nipples

    • Bad Latch / Painful Latch

    • Slow infant weight gain

    • Low Milk Supply / Oversupply

    • Engorgement, Clogged Ducts, Mastitis

    • Suspected Tongue Tie

    • Introducing Bottles

    • Pumping Schedules

    • Returning to Work

Benefits of Virtual Breastfeeding Support Include:

  • The option for quality breastfeeding support from the comfort of home, regardless of the local IBCLC availablilty

  • Breastfeeding Support for families in remote areas without local lactation support

  • Parents experience empowerment and deeper understanding of challenges and solutions as they take a more active role during the consult assisting the LC with oral exams, feeding exams, etc.

  • Often available sooner than in-person breastfeeding support

  • Typically covered by insurance

While Virtual Lactation Consults are a wonderful option, there are some challenges that can come with online breastfeeding help.

Things that might help your virtual consult run smoother are a good internet connection, good lighting, a charged battery on the device you use, an extra set of hands to help adjust phone/tablet/computer for better angles if IBCLC needs a better view of latch/feeding skills.

Because it is not possible for me to do a pre/post feed weight, if you have an infant scale available, it could be helpful during our visit. A list of recent weights from pediatrician is very important and helpful as well. While it is not expected or recommended for all parents, if you are dealing with infant weight loss / slow weight gain issues, you might consider renting a scale from a local DME (Durable Medical Equipment) provider. These rentals are often covered by insurance, and can help us better track your baby's progress.

Depending on the nature of your breastfeeding challenges, the IBCLC may refer you to other providers for hands on care including a local Chiropractor, ENT, Pediatric Dentist, Physical Therapist, Speech Therapist, Etc.
