Breastfeeding & Babywearing is my go-to tip for surviving postpartum without a strong support system…

But let’s be honest—motherhood is not always as “natural” as Instagram makes it look. Baby wearing and breastfeeding are similar in the sense they are both romanticized but never seem to be as simple as they look...

Whether you’re brand new to babywearing and just trying to get it to work without crying (you or the baby), or you're experienced but wanna learn more, here’s what you need to know.

First Things First: Babywearing and Breastfeeding Are Both Skills

Just like breastfeeding, babywearing isn’t something you’re supposed to magically know how to do the second you give birth. They’re learned, practiced, and personalized skills—especially when you want to combine them.

So before we mash them together, we make sure you understand each one on its own. This sets the stage for safe, comfortable, and confident moments—not stress or second-guessing.

Combining Breastfeeding & Babywearing

Babywearing while breastfeeding can feel like a superpower. Picture this:

You’re out with your toddler, baby snuggled against your chest, nursing calmly as you help tie a shoe, wipe a tear, or grab a coffee. It’s not about perfection—it’s about presence.

This combo helps you:

  • Feed on cue (not on a schedule)

  • Stay connected and responsive

  • Move through your day with freedom

  • Tune into your baby’s cues with less stress

But this only works when safety is non-negotiable.

Safety while baby wearing & breastfeeding

Here are some non-negotiables to protect your baby and your peace of mind:

  • Keep baby visible + kissable — You should see their face at all times, and kiss the top of their head without straining.

  • Support that little airway — No chin-to-chest slumping! Baby should be upright and alert during feeds.

  • Mind their legs + hips — Baby’s legs should form an “M” shape, with knees higher than bum.

  • Breastfeed safely — Loosen your carrier slightly to allow baby to latch in an upright position, then return them to their high, safe spot when they’re done.

  • Don’t over-tighten — Especially postpartum, your abdomen needs healing, not compression. You shouldn’t feel like you’re wearing a corset.

Choosing a Baby Carrier That Works With Your Body

Your body was beautifully designed—curves, softness, and all. And your carrier should honor that.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Buckle carriers = easy to clip, but can be tricky to fit just right without trying a few brands.

  • Ring slings = great for quick ups, cozy cuddles, and easy adjustments (especially for breastfeeding).

  • Stretchy or woven wraps = more learning curve, but endless adjustability and comfort for most body types.

If you’re fuller-chested, have a shorter torso, or are in the thick of postpartum recovery, customizable carriers like wraps and slings often win the day.

Baby wearing & Breastfeeding might be tricky at first

You’re not doing it wrong just because it’s hard at first. Breastfeeding and baby wearing are like dancing with a partner—you both learn the rhythm over time.

Reach out for help if you need it. There are amazing professionals like Jordan Marillo (aka @thebabywearing.ot) who offers virtual fit checks, and local support groups who can guide you through it with compassion and grace.
