Today we’re diving into wearable breast pumps. There’s a lot of chatter about them—are they worth it? Are they helpful? Are they even effective?

If you're pregnant and trying to decide whether or not you should get a wearable pump, this episode will shed some light.

Like always, my answer is: it depends—on your personal needs and your goals.

You’ve probably heard that wearable pumps are not intended to be your main pump. They’re generally not ideal for building or maintaining supply. They’re meant for occasional use, right?

But… I don’t fully agree with that.

Yes, most wearable pumps are not designed to be your primary pump—especially if you're exclusively pumping or working to increase a low milk supply.

However, if your low supply is because baby isn’t latching and you’re struggling to find time to pump, a wearable pump can actually be a huge help. It allows you to fit in extra sessions—and some milk removal is better than no milk removal, even if it's not a hospital-grade pump.

I was working with a mom who was exclusively pumping and supplementing with formula—not because her body couldn't make enough milk, but because she couldn't pump enough times to make enough milk. The logistics were overwhelming. She was trying to teach baby to latch, bottle-feeding, and barely finding time to pump.

I told her, “I’m not the biggest fan of wearable pumps, but if you already have one, use it. If you can pump four times with your wearable and four times with your primary pump, you might be able to see a shift.”

So she tried it. And guess what?

Her milk supply increased—because she was finally able to get more stimulation.

She could pump while bottle-feeding. She could multitask. She wasn’t stuck trying to make time for everything. And that added stimulation helped her start producing more milk.

Eventually, she upgraded to a different wearable pump with stronger suction—and that resulted in even more milk output.

Here’s what I want you to consider when it comes to wearable pumps:

  • What are your goals?

  • How do you plan to implement pumping?

  • Is it a convenient option for your lifestyle—not just in terms of mobility, but also cleaning and maintenance?

There are so many wearable pumps on the market now, and they all come with different features and interfaces. You’ll want to look at suction cycles, comfort, cleaning needs, and battery life.

I’ll admit—I’m not a tech expert. But among the moms I work with, two wearable pump brands get the most love:

  • Baby Buddha

  • Momcozy

They’re structured totally differently. The Baby Buddha has a motor and tubing; the Momcozy is an all-in-one, in-bra unit. But both have worked well for different moms.

Now—I don’t personally use wearable pumps, and I usually don’t make specific pump recommendations, but those two brands are often mentioned by the moms I support.

So if you're pregnant and wondering, should I get a wearable pump? Here's my honest take:

If your insurance only covers one pump, choose a traditional style pump—something reliable and strong like the Spectra. You’ll want that workhorse if you need to:

  • Exclusively pump

  • Build your supply

  • Or manage early feeding challenges, especially with a preemie

I wouldn’t recommend using your only insurance-covered pump to get a wearable.

However—if you already have a strong pump in good condition (like I did with my last baby), and your current insurance benefits allow you to get a second pump, then a wearable might be a great secondary option.

Wearable pumps can give you flexibility. They’re not for everyone, and they’re not the solution to every problem—but in some cases, they can help you fit in those extra sessions that make all the difference.

If you’re struggling with breastfeeding or pumping, and you’re just not sure what to do next—but you know you're notready to quit—you are not alone.
